2019 AWF 50th Anniversary Hall of Fame Awards

March 8, 2019

On March 7, 2019, in Washington, D.C. on their 50th anniversary, the U.S. Army Women’s Foundation conducted their 2019 Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. CSM (Ret.) Billie Jo Boersma was one of 5 inductees. Reflecting on her more than 25 years in the Army, 18 months of those as Fort Belvoir Garrison Command Sergeant Major, Billie Jo said “I’d like people to know that I cared every day and I came to work to serve. Instead of individual accomplishments, I have always focused on and believed in team effort.”

In a career full of extraordinary accomplishments, Billie Jo was the first female Command Sergeant Major of an Infantry Brigade Combat Team in combat. An opportunity given to her by an extraordinary leader who believed in her abilities and leadership and didn’t see gender as an obstacle.

“I fell in love with the Army in the first two weeks I was in it. My entire journey has been about the people who believed in me, the people who gave me opportunities and the Soldiers who believed in what I was saying. As long as I led them they would follow me.”

“If there’s any true sign that you know you did well, it’s when you see Soldiers and younger people continuing to be successful and strive, based on something you told them or showed them over a decade ago. That’s the true meaning of this whole profession.”

Her assignments include 504th Signal Company, Munster Depot, Germany; D, 440th Signal Battalion, Darmstadt, Germany; D, 86th Signal Battalion, Fort Huachuca, Ariz.; A, 327th Signal Battalion, Fort Bragg, N.C.; A, 51st Signal Battalion, Fort Bragg, N.C.; 586th NSC, 525 MI BDE, Fort Bragg, N.C.; E, 1/61 Infantry Regiment, Fort Jackson, S.C.; U.S. Army Drill Sergeant School, Fort Jackson, S.C.; HQ, TRADOC, Fort Monroe, Va.; 101st Airborne (Air Assault) Division, Fort Campbell, Ky.; Joint Staff Support Center, Pentagon; Command Sergeant Major 3/1 STB and 3/1 IBCT,  Soldier For Life SGM at HQDA and the Garrison Command Sergeant Major of Fort Belvoir, VA.
